Two new Austell City Council members took their oath of office in December to begin serving a four-year term.
Ollie Clemons, Jr. becomes the first African-American to serve on the Austell Council in the At Large, Post 1 seat. Randy Green retook the Ward 3 seat he held four years ago. Kirsten Anderson, who was reelected to the Ward 1 post, was sworn in separately.
“It’s a time of great beginnings,” said City Judge David Darden during the swearing-in ceremony December 12.
Clemons, a postal executive, expressed his thanks for the support of Mayor Joe Jerkins and former Councilwoman Beverly James Boyd.
“She took me from campaign 101 to Council 300 at light speed,” Clements said. “Thank you all for your love and support.”
He called his election “a historic day” for Austell.
Clemens has served on the planning and zoning commission, and the Austell Area Council Impact Committee. His goal is to “see how we can drive more business development into downtown, along with residential development.”
Green has 12 years experience on the Council and “I’m still learning constantly,” he said. “I thank everyone in this room and many more.”
