Spring is just around the corner and the Historic Mableton Community Garden, located on Floyd Road across from the Mable House, is planning for the upcoming season. If you are interested in gardening at HMCG this spring, contact Garden Leader Philippa Monthrope at mabletongarden@yahoo.com . Garden plots for new gardeners will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Senior citizens 60-and-over enjoy special rates. The HMCG is managed by the Mableton Improvement Coalition.
Meetings have already begun between gardeners and stakeholders to share ideas for the coming year. Plans were made for collaboration with the Mableton Farmers Market, garden beautification, and a continuation of social events among other good ideas. The Garden is also looking for a Master Gardener knowledgeable about organic vegetable gardening. Please contact Philippa if you or someone you know can help.
The HMCG is supported by partners at Lifelong Mableton and AARP.
The flagship Mableton Community Garden at Nickajack Park in Mableton will be entering its sixth year of operation. A kickoff meeting is scheduled for March 14, 6:30pm at the garden, 3630 Oakdale Road. Everyone interested in gardening is invited to participate. Meantime, if you have questions or want to confirm your interest, contact Dave McDaniel at treasurer@mableton.org
The Mableton Improvement Coalition is in discussions with Green Street Properties about establishing another MIC-managed community garden between River View Road and the Chattahoochee River, approximately four-tenths mile off Veterans Memorial Highway. Drive by and check it out at 6271 Riverview Road. There are several acres of open land, including ample space for planting rows to feed the hungry. The area is fenced and water for the plots is available. Green Street Properties is willing to help volunteers make needed infrastructure improvements to make the garden viable. If you are interested in helping build raised bed boxes, shovel planting medium and/or gardening in this area, contact Dave McDaniel at treasurer@mableton.org. This imitative will also be discussed at the Mableton Community Garden kickoff meeting March 14.

Eligible not-for-profit organizations will have the opportunity to compete for two grants which will be awarded on the basis of a point system. First place grant is $1,000 and second place grant is $500. Points can be earned as a result of registering attendees, race participation, volunteering to help run activities of the day and arranging sponsor support. Check the website at www.mabletonday.com for more details about participation and how to earn the points.
Planning meetings are underway and will continue approximately every two weeks until the day of the event.
