The Smyrna Optimist Club will host its 14th annual “Flippin for Kids” Pancake Breakfast on Nov. 28 at First Smyrna United Methodist Church. The event is the largest fundraiser for Optimist, generating over $10,000 annually. All funds raised are used to pay for some of the 50 Youth oriented projects throughout the community.
“Each year since its inception the event has grown in size and in stature,” said President Chuck Hoskins. “It truly has become sort of a Smyrna Community Reunion.” Entire families, sometimes three generations, kids returning from college, neighbors that just don’t seem to have time to spend together, all gather at the event and stay for hours. At any given time, there will be 200 guests visiting each other. “It really has become a time to get reacquainted with folks you have not seen since last year.”
Because the event is held the Saturday morning after Thanksgiving, more family and friends tend to come together to socialize. Many people stop to catch an early breakfast before hitting the malls.
“Where else can you go at 8 in the morning, have all you can eat hot off the grill pancakes, sausage, juice, and coffee for $5?” said Max Bacon, Mayor of Smyrna. “This is a wonderful community tradition that we look forward to each Thanksgiving weekend. The Optimist Club does great things for the kids of the community; this is one way to help support that effort.”
This year’s event will begin at 8 a.m. and serve until 11 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall at the Smyrna First United Methodist Church, 1315 Concord Road, Smyrna. Tickets are being sold in advance by the club members and can also be purchased at the door for $5. To get tickets call Tara Carr 678-772-7894 and ask for Optimist tickets.
