Kylie Hardy with Cobb School Superintendent Chris Ragsdale

KYLIE HARDY NAMED DISTRICT TEACHER OF THE YEAR

As the ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages) teacher gathered with her fellow educators at Mableton Elementary School for professional learning, Superintendent Chris Ragsdale surprised Hardy for the second time this school year. During the first week of school, he named her Cobb’s Elementary School Teacher of the Year. This time, he returned with an even bigger announcement: Hardy is Cobb’s 2026-27 District Teacher of the Year!

For Mableton Elementary School ESOL teacher Kylie Hardy, the surprise announcement that she was the Cobb School District’s Teacher of the Year was almost too much to process.

“I froze,” Hardy recalled. “I started putting the pieces together, and it was just surreal.”

Now in her 12th year as an educator, Hardy’s path wasn’t always easy. After a challenging start in the classroom, she discovered her passion when she transitioned to teaching English to multilingual learners. Today, she serves as the ESOL lead teacher at Mableton Elementary, helping students from around the world develop the language skills they need to thrive in school and beyond.

“I get many students who come into this country knowing absolutely nothing,” Hardy said. “Some have never even been in school before.” Watching those students gain confidence in English is what motivates her every day.”

That progress makes the recognition especially meaningful.

“This honor validates that what I’m doing matters,” she said. Hardy also hopes her story encourages educators to persevere through the difficult moments. “I almost quit this profession several times,” she said. “But finding ESOL reminded me exactly why I wanted to teach.”

Hardy credits Cobb Schools’ collaborative culture and investment in educator growth for helping both teachers and students succeed. In addition to leading her school’s ESOL team, she is among hundreds of Cobb teachers selected for Georgia’s BEST, the district’s teacher development program, and is on track to graduate in December.

“I appreciate how much they support teachers so that we can support kids,” Hardy said. “Georgia’s BEST has been huge. It reminded me why I decided to go back to school, and it’s been fantastic.”

SMYRNA PUBLIC SAFETY SPECIAL CEREMONY

The Smyrna Public Safety Foundation, in conjunction with the city of Smyrna, the Smyrna Fire Department and the Smyrna Police Department, will honor the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks during a special ceremony.

The event, which is open to the public, will start at 8 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 11, with a ceremony at the front entrance of Smyrna City Hall, located at 2800 King Street SE in downtown Smyrna. In the grassy area between Smyrna City Hall and the Twentieth Century Veterans Memorial, a display of flags will represent the Twin Towers that were targeted and destroyed in the attacks.

The flags will be set up on the evening of Thursday, Sept. 10, and will remain in place through Sunday, Sept. 13. At 9:05 a.m. on Sept. 11, following the ceremony at City Hall, Smyrna’s first responders will participate in a run through downtown to honor those who died. The run is expected to conclude by 9:30.

The Smyrna Public Safety Foundation is offering 25th-anniversary challenge coins for a $25 donation. All proceeds will benefit Smyrna first responders.

Additional details about the event will be announced. For more information, visit SmyrnaPSF.org.

ALKALINE BATTERY RECYCLING PROGRAM BEGINS

Keep Cobb Beautiful and the Cobb County Public Library are launching a new sustainability initiative to keep hazardous household waste out of landfills. Beginning on Monday, August 17, residents can drop off used alkaline batteries for recycling at seven designated library branches across the county:
  • East Cobb: 4880 Lower Roswell Rd Ste 510-B, Marietta
  • Mountain View Regional Library: 3320 Sandy Plains Rd, Marietta
  • North Cobb Regional: 3535 Old 41 Hwy NW, Kennesaw
  • South Cobb Regional: 805 Clay Rd, Mableton
  • Sweetwater Valley: 5000 Austell Powder Springs Rd #100, Austell
  • Switzer: 266 Roswell St NE, Marietta, GA 30060
  • West Cobb Regional: 1750 Dennis Kemp Ln NW, Kennesaw
Through a partnership with recycling innovator TerraCycle, specialized battery collection buckets will be stationed behind service desks of select high-traffic library locations. This initiative addresses a critical gap in local waste management, as alkaline batteries are frequently discarded in regular household trash.

Batteries thrown away in household trash pose a fire hazard, putting residents and sanitation workers at risk. While there are other free recycling drop-off options for other battery types like lithium-ion and lead-acid, finding places to take alkaline batteries is a challenge in our area. This program gives residents a convenient, free way to safely dispose of batteries and support Cobb’s long-term environmental sustainability and safety goals.

The program accepts standard household alkaline batteries, including AA, AAA, C, D, and 9V at the circulation desks of participating library branches. Library staff will ensure safety by making sure all terminals of batteries are taped before placing them in collection buckets.
