SOUTH COBB ROTARY WELCOMES NEW POLICE CHIEF
On Thursday, July 24, the South Cobb Rotary Club hosted an engaging and informative meeting featuring the newly appointed Chief of Police for the City of Austell, Chief Shameta Jones-Harrell. Chief Jones-Harrell was joined by Mayor Ollie Clemons, Jr., Deputy Chief C. Lloyd Garrett, and Rotarian & Director of Community Affairs, Darrell Weaver.
Chief Jones-Harrell, the first female Chief of Police in Austell’s history, shared her vision for strengthening community partnerships, enhancing public safety, and ensuring transparency in law enforcement. Her remarks emphasized collaboration with local organizations, including the South Cobb Rotary Club, to foster positive relationships between the police department and the community.
“We are thrilled to welcome Chief Jones-Harrell and her leadership team,” said Pamela Kramer, Rotary Club President. “Their dedication to building trust and working hand-in-hand with citizens reflects the values we uphold as Rotarians—service above self.”

SUNDAY LIBRARY LECTURE: THE CITY
THAT NEVER WAS
Presenter, Dr. William P. Marchione, author of A Brief History of Smyrna, Georgia (History Press, 2013) will discuss the identity of Smyrna’s mayors and city council members serving in the 1872 to 1900 period. The event is set for Sunday, August 3 from 3 to 4 p.m. Smyrna Public Library, Meeting Room. The Sunday Lecture series is sponsored by the Friends of Smyrna Library.
This period has long been a matter of conjecture. The traditional explanation for this informational void holds that a fire destroyed Smyrna’s earliest city records.
A close analysis of news columns establishes, beyond a reasonable doubt, that Smyrna, though authorized by its Charter of 1872 to establish a functioning municipal government, never did so.
This leads to a host of questions. What forces were behind the 1872 incorporation initiative? What was the role of the powerful W&A Railroad in fostering the incorporation venture? What were the resident sponsors of Smyrna’s 1872 incorporation hoping to achieve? Most importantly, why were the provisions of Smyrna’s 1872 act of incorporation never approved by Smyrna’s body politic?

On August 9, runners, walkers, and spectators, will gather for the 2025 Vinings Downhill 5K race. The course begins at the top of Mt. Wilkinson, winds around the Cumberland Mall area, and ends at the Lovett School (280-foot net drop).
Despite the name of the race, well, it’s “not quite” all downhill…there are three hills to climb throughout the race – at the half-mile mark, during the second mile and during the last half-mile. There are also three really amazing down hill sections that make up for those climbs! There is also a Kids 1K Fun Run and a fun Doggie Dash & Costume Contest.

“RACE TO SEE” SET FOR AUGUST 23
Big News, Smyrna! The Race to See is back in Smyrna on August 23. The race will begin at Brinkley Park on the 23rd. Join other runners for a pet-and family-friendly 5K (7:30 a.m.) plus a fun 1K Kids Run (7:15 a.m.).

LIONS CLUBS HELP WITH BOOK BAG GIVEAWAY
Pearson Middle School hosted the Braves Foundation and Chick-Fil-A’s Back To School Book Bag Giveaway and Health Fair, successfully distributing over 800 book bags full of school supplies to students preparing for the upcoming school year. Additionally, Lions Clubs from across Cobb County conducted nearly 200 vision screenings, while Summitt Pediatrics offered hearing and other tests. Families received complimentary haircuts, hygiene items, and diapers, resulting in a large turnout and numerous smiling faces.

GROUPS PROVIDE BOOKBAGS AND TREATS
Kudos to the Mableton Pastors Collective, Cobb County Sheriff’s Department, and HOPE Family Resource Center for pulling off an epic event. Participants were treated to awesome entertainment, book bags bursting with school supplies, and delicious food including hot dogs, popcorn, Willie B,s side dishes and lots of drinks. The Mableton Supermarket’s grand opening was a real bash, complete with complimentary tacos and discounted groceries. A huge thanks to local church bands and DJ Que for the beautiful music. Judging by the smiles, the event was a resounding success.

 ENJOY FOOD TRUCK TUESDAY
Join others for Smyrna Food Truck Tuesday each Tuesday now through September 23 (no event the week of July 4 and the week of Labor Day) at Taylor-Brawner Park from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. (3180 Atlanta Road, Smyrna).
This event is the best Food Truck event series around! Enjoy the offerings from a weekly gathering of quality mobile gourmet trucks and a bit of sweet mixed in and music, too.
Please follow parking directions and remember to park legally.

- If you can walk or bike to Food Truck Tuesdays, please plan to do so. You will enjoy it and your community-minded efforts will allow a visitor to experience Smyrna and our wonderful Taylor-Brawner Park as well as the food trucks, too.
