THE PEOPLE WHO RAN (AND RODE) THE TRAINS
Railroads didn’t just pass through Smyrna. Many people in the area depended on them for their livelihoods. Whether holding high-profile positions such as a conductor or meeting your spouse at the streetcar stop, railroads played a role in many lives. This Sunday library presentation, “Smyrna and the Railroad: The People Who Ran (and Rode) the Trains”, will look at some of the lesser-known railroad stories throughout history. Sunday, September 7, from 3 – 4 p.m. at the Smyrna Public Library, Meeting Room. Light refreshments will be served.
Speaker Todd DeFeo has written extensively about railroads, authoring several unique railroad books, including histories of the Atlanta Northern Railway, the Memphis, Clarksville & Louisville Railroad and the Western & Atlantic Railroad. His presentations include rare and well-researched anecdotes to bring the stories of those impacted by railroads to life. His book, Built for High Speed: A Brief History of the Atlanta Northern Railway, is available for check out from Smyrna Public Library.

SMYRNA ARTS COUNCIL TO HOLD CELEBRATION
The Smyrna Arts Council invites the community to join in a special milestone: its 10th Anniversary Celebration, happening Saturday, September 13th at Taylor-Brawner Hall — an evening of art, silent auction, entertainment, and mystery that promises to be unforgettable.
But beware… there’s a twist.
Just as we planned to unveil a priceless collection of artwork from local talent, a shocking art heist has occurred! Now, guests are called to solve the crime in a live, interactive murder mystery performance, all while enjoying dinner, drinks, a silent auction and a vibrant celebration of Smyrna’s creative spirit.
As the Council celebrates 10 years of impact, this fundraiser marks both a celebration of what’s been achieved and a launchpad for future growth —including the kickoff of new sponsorship tiers designed to deepen engagement and expand support for the arts.
Ticket will include light bites, drinks, a silent auction, and a live theatrical experience.
All proceeds will directly support the Council’s ongoing programming, ensuring continued opportunities to create, present, and celebrate art across Smyrna for the next decade and beyond.
“This event is a reflection of Smyrna’s commitment to the arts and community.” said Vanya Foote, President of the Smyrna Arts Council. “By coming together in support of this event, we ensure that art remains accessible, inspiring, and essential to the cultural fabric of our city.” For tickets and more information, click here.
