BLACK HISTORY MONTH CELEBRATION DINNER:
A NIGHT OF BLACK HISTORY LIVE

The Smyrna Public Library will celebrate 2025 Black History Month with a Celebration Dinner on Friday, February 28, from 6 to -8:30 p.m. in the Smyrna Community Center, Large Gym, 1250 Powder Springs Street, Smyrna.

Join them for a night of Black History Live. Atlanta playwright, Kelundra Smith, will be the featured speaker. She will discuss her journey from journalism to drama and introduce scenes from her play, “The Wash.” The full cast will read two scenes and transport us in time to Atlanta’s Reconstruction era.

Tickets include dinner catered by World Renown Catering, a presentation by playwright Kelundra Smith, and readings from her most recent production. General Admission: $20 and Reserved table of 6: $120. Ticket prices increase to $30 per seat on Monday, February 24. Buy your tickets here.

Kelundra Smith is an arts and culture journalist, playwright, theater critic, and editor, committed to connecting people with cultural experiences. Smith writes stories about the South, blending her background in journalism and theater. She holds a master’s degree in arts journalism from Syracuse University’s Goldring Arts Journalism program and dual bachelor’s degrees in journalism and theater from the University of Georgia. Smith is an active member of the American Theatre Critics Association and the National Association of Black Journalists and has been a fellow at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre Center National Critics Institute.

“The Wash” by Kelundra Smith is a new, homegrown play inspired by the Atlanta Washerwomen’s Strike of 1881. Just weeks before the International Cotton Exposition swept into the city, African American laundresses took a stand, demanding the right to set their own wages. The strike went from a dozen women to more than 3,000 in three weeks. The Wash offers an intimate and often funny look at ordinary women who went from workers to fighters– and won.

SMYRNA HOLDS TOWN HALL MEETING

The City of Smyrna will be holding a Town Hall Meeting on Thursday, February 13 from 6:30 to 7:30 at City Hall, 2800 King Street, Smyrna. Come to the Council Chambers on the 13th to hear an update on city plans and projects. If unable to attend in person, citizens can view the meeting live online at SmyrnaGA.gov


LAST DAY FOR ADVANCE VOTING FOR COUNTY COMMISSION POSTS

Advance voting for the special election for two county commission posts will end today, February 7. The Primary Election will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 11. If necessary, a runoff election will take place on March 11. The General Special Election will take place on April 29. Only Cobb Commission Districts 2 and 4 voters will be eligible to vote in this special election.

Democrat candidates for District two Commissioner include: Jaha Howard, Erick Allen, Tracy Stevenson, and Taniesha Whorton. Republican candidate for District two Commissioner is Alicia Adams.

Democrat candidates for District four Commissioner include: Yashica Marshall and Monique Sheffield (incumbent). Republican candidates for District four Commissioner are Julien Grhas and Matthew Hardwick. 


THE GEORGIA GROWN FOOD PLUS WINE EVENT WILL TICKLE THE TASTE BUDS

The 4th annual Food and Wine Festival is set to kick off on March 21 and end on March 23. The Georgia Food + Wine Festival, presented by Georgia Grown, will celebrate the best of Georgia and the South, from its culinary superstars and beverage experts, to farmers, artisans, live musicians and more.

There will be events for families and events for ages 21 and older. The festival will be held at Jim R Miller Park, 2245 Callaway Road S.W., Marietta, under the management of JRM, which manages and produces fairs, festivals, and other special events throughout the southeast. Georgia Grown will be featuring their members in a variety of ways, including:
