SOUTH COBB GOALBALL TOURNAMENT HELD IN SMYRNA
The SEC Goalball Tournament held at the Smyrna Recreation Center was a big success. GA Blind Sports Director Hal Simpson coordinated the event. Volunteers from the Atlanta International Christian Church, Kennesaw State, GA Blind Sports, Lions Club and others worked together to make sure that everything was ready for the players.
The Marietta Lions Club provided and served dinner; the South Cobb Lions Club handled the break room and shuttle driving. The East Cobb Lions Club provided the BBQ dinner on Saturday night and the shuttle driving all day on Saturday. During the awards presentation, mentioned a very specific message of appreciation to the Lions who helped.
There was lots of action for people who love sports. There was a rematch in the men’s championship game from last year. This year, the Atlanta Force beat the very tough Puerto Rican Los Gallos team. The Puerto Rican’s teams did very well across all brackets this year. They brought a large, loud fanbase with them. Their women’s team, the Los Leonas, won second place in their tournament against the Atlanta Blazers. One of their male players was awarded the Male Spirit Award while an Atlanta Blazers player won the Female Spirit Award. One volunteer stated, “that watching these young athletes reunite from across the US for a fun filled, competitive weekend is worth my time”
