KID-CON OFFERS FAMILY FUN MARCH 8

It’s a morning of crafts, games, character appearances and fun for the whole family. Hosted by the Smyrna Public Library, Kid-Con will be held on Saturday March 8 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Smyrna Community Center’s Big Gym and the Magnolia Room.

For this free event, children of all ages are encouraged to dress as their favorite book character and enter our KID-CON costume contest–we’ll have a family award, too. Registration for the costume contest will be held from 10:30 a.m. – 11 on the stage. We encourage those wishing to participate in the costume contest to print and fill out an entry form prior to arriving at the event. Winners will be announced at noon and will be called to the stage to receive their trophy.

Explore different hands-on activities, games, and crafts in the Big Gym. Visit the Magnolia Room (across the hall from the gym) and explore over 20 different non-profit organizations and community vendors to learn about services and products available in the Smyrna community. Each vendor and non-profit will have a game or activity as well.

We’ll have special appearances from Pigeon (books by Mo Willems), Dog Man (books by Dav Pilkey), Bluey, Barbie, Pikachu, and more!

There will be a limited amount of KID-CON shirts available for purchase for $15 from the Friends of Smyrna Library. All proceeds will go towards hosting next year’s KID-CON event. Sizes are available in toddler, youth, and adult sizes. Cash, credit, PayPal, and Venmo accepted.

Please utilize the overflow parking lot across from the Community Center. The wheelchair and stroller accessible entrance will be available from the Powder Springs Rd entrance of the Community Center.

PRIMARY VOTING IS NOT OVER YET

Advance Voting for the March 11, District 2 Special Democratic Primary Runoff Election begins March 3. Voters can vote in advance voting at the main election office in Marietta or the Smyrna Community Center. On March 11 voters must go to their assigned voting location.

A runoff will be held on March 11in the County Commissioner’s District 2 democrat race between Erick Allen and Jaha Howard. The winner of the runoff will face republican Alicia Adams on April 29 for the General Election. The winner of the April election will be the new District 2 commissioner.

Incumbent commissioner for District 4, Monique Sheffield, was the winner of the democrat primary on February 11. She will face republican Matthew Hardwick in the General election on April 29.

Some residents in Cobb County went to the polls Tuesday, Feb. 11, for two special election primaries for seats on the county Board of Commissioners. The special elections were made necessary by court rulings last year ordering Cobb to abandon election maps the Democratic-leaning County commission had drawn on its own, in opposition to maps drafted by the Republican-held state legislature. The county commission had argued it could hold elections using its own maps under the state constitution’s “home rule” provisions. A Cobb County Superior Court judge determined the “home rule” map was unconstitutional, and invalidated primaries that had been held last year in the district 2 and 4 races.
